VOLUME OF LIQUID


Misconception on capacity may arise among the students while teaching volume of liquid. Students confusing when comparing capacity of two containers that can hold more. Students always make the comparison on height rather than its capacity.

CONCEPT


Capacity

The amount of liquid, a container can hold when it is full.




Volume

The volume of liquid is the amount of liquid it occupies.





Same capacity but different volume of liquid.
The green mug is full of water
The red mug is half full of water
The brown mug is empty

Watch as these childrens demonstrates that they does not understand conservation of liquid.


First, he say that there are two glasses holding the same amount of water.  After the experimenter pours one glass' water into a taller and narrower container, the child says that this container is holding more water than the other glass.

Children also often believe that the amount of liquid has changed when a set amount has been poured from one container to another of a different size. They believe that there is more liquid in the one that has the highest level.

TEACHING ACTIVITIES

 A. Low Achiever Pupils
     Measure and compare volumes of liquids using non-standard units          

    Learning Outcome :
   
    Pupils will be able to compare the volume of two liquid by direct comparison

    Materials :
  • 2 similar size drinking glasses 
  • 2 similar size bottles 
  • 2 similar size jugs

    Procedures :  
  • Teacher introduce the vocabulary of less and more volume of liquid. Look at the power points presentation. 
  • Hold up 2 drinking glasses. 
  • Ask students to tell the similarities between the glass.
  • Label the glass with A and B. Fill up the glass with water. 
  • Student compare volume of liquid in 2 glass. 
  • Ask student to answer the statement below:

    a.
    Glass A have  more / less   volume of liquid than glass B
    b.
    Glass  _____ have more volume of liquid than glass _____

  • Repeat with different sets of containers.

    Conclusion : 

    We can compare the capacity of liquid by height if the containers are same in sizes.

 B. High Achiever Pupils
     Measure and compare volumes of liquids using non-standard units.      
   

     Learning Outcome:  

     Pupils will be able to measure volume of liquids using non-standards units.

     Materials : 
  • four set of glass (same sizes) 
  • four jugs 
  • four bowls 
  • four pails of water
     Procedure :   
  • Divide the class into four groups. Lets them work in their cooperative groups. 
  • Choose a pupil in each group to be the leader of the group. 
  • Give each group a set of cups, jug, bowl and a pail of water.  
  • Ask pupils to fill the jug with a cup of water, then have the pupils estimate the numbers of cups needed to fill the jug.



  • Pupils record their estimation in the following table :

    Bowl

  • The teacher instructs pupils to fill up the jug and count the number of cups needed to make the jug full with water. 
  • Repeat this activities for other containers. 
  • The pupils record their finding in the table given. (table 1) 
  • The pupils summarise the lesson by answer the statement below:

i.
The volume in the jug is the same as capacity of _____ cups.
ii.
The volume of water in the bowl is the same as capacity of ____cups.

Conclusin : 

For this activities, pupils stat that the more bigger capacity, the more volume 
of liquid is needed to fill in.

CONCLUSION

Measuring volume of liquids with concreate experience in realistic situations is the best way for children to understand the concepts of volume and capacity. Pupils can easily learn while they involve in the teaching and learning activities. These teaching activities and teaching aid are suitable for low and high achiever students. Hope it can give some idea to teach ‘volume of liquid’.
